Step 1: Assessment

Before we investigate mechanics our test vehicles need to be in top condition. To ensure this, we use two different trusted mechanics to inspect the vehicle with “pre-purchase” inspection check lists. These trustworthy mechanics are familiar with I Wouldn’t Take My Car There! and do not know the mechanics in question. We insure that there is never a conflict of interest affecting the results of the initial inspection.

Step 2: Showtime

Now to the mechanic in question. We bring the car in for an assessment, seeking to know any repairs that need to be done. Three potential outcomes present themselves:
1. The mechanic passes the test, advising that the car is indeed in good shape
2. The mechanic creates work that needs to be done in an attempt to get more money
3. The mechanic finds something genuine that the initial inspection missed. *In this last case we review the camera footage and have a trusted professional give a second opinion.

Step 3: Results

Independent inspection results are compared with the mechanic's results. A mechanic is deemed "I Wouldn’t Take My Car There! Approved" if their inspection matches the independent checks.

Step 4: Pledge

The mechanics we test have no idea they are being tested. Our testers appear as regular customers going in for a routine check up. The method of testing, tester and test vehicle will routinely change to ensure mechanics have no knowledge of our work. This will ensure that they cannot manipulate the system.

Step 5: Finally...

I Wouldn’t Take My Car There! is here to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys - the reliable mechanics from the frauds. By arming consumers with knowledge, we set the groundwork for the good mechanics to rise to the top and for the bad mechanics to be exposed. Transparency is truth and it can change the direction of the automotive industry. At Anolist, we’re committed to helping you find the trustworthy mechanic that’s right for you.

CBC's Marketplace explains this process:

I wouldn’t want my car to be inspected because the mechanic might deliberately damage it.
